90th celebrations lift ABC to third place

Leigh Sales final episode won its slot as 90th celebrations helped ABC to pip 10 on Thursday.

It was a night of celebrations on ABC with Leigh Sales’ last edition of 7:30 and a live 90th special, spilling out into the foyer at Ultimo headquarters.

Sales low-key 7:30 sign off won its timeslot at 572,000 metro viewers, ahead of MasterChef Australia (516,000) then ABC 90 Celebrate! (412,000 from 8-10pm) -helping ABC to finish the night in third place.

Seven screened AFL to 390,000 viewers across the network while Nine’s NRL drew 295,000.

Seven won the night at 28.4% then Nine 25.7%, ABC 19.6%, 10 17.9% and SBS 8.3%.

Seven News was #1 at 856,000 / 803,ooo then The Chase (469,000 / 286,000). Home & Away screened largely on 7TWO with 300,000 overall and topping multichannels. Britain’s Got Talent was 94,000.

Nine News was best for Nine at 809,000 / 790,000 then A Current Affair winning at 576,000. Hot Seat drew 450,000 / 276,000. Wimbledon drew up to 132,000 across the network.

ABC News was 575,000. The Drum scored 163,000.

The Project pulled 337,000 / 250,000 for 10. 10 News First was 271,000 / 190,000. Law & Order: SVU was 222,000 with a Cheap Seats replay at 108,000.

It was a low night for SBS with SBS World News (127,000 / 113,000), House of Maxwell (124,000), Scenic Coastal Walks with Kate Humble (117,000), DI Ray (108,000) and Mastermind (73,000).

  1. I mentioned this in the TV Lounge page comments, but for the readers that don’t have time to go there, ABC 90 Celebrate! was too condensed and fast-paced. They had to fit so much into 2 hours when it should have gone for 4 or 5 hours. Many shows had a very fleeting mention, literally 3 seconds. When shows like Consuming Passions was mentioned, there were audible gasps of interest and surprise from the audience. But it was over in a flash in 3 seconds and they moved on to the next show. It didn’t do many shows justice or gravitas that was needed.

    Otherwise some great memories, great history and a few moments that became too much for me emotionally.
